A weekly exploration of leadership, human potential, and meaningful achievement.
Some conversations stay with us for years. Not because we understand them immediately…But because life eventually teaches us what they really meant. One such conversation happened early in my career.
I was discussing career progression with my manager when he said something that stopped me in my tracks. He smiled and said,
“Of course I want the next promotion. Just… not yet. I still have a lot to learn before I’m ready for the responsibilities that come with it.”
At the time, I nodded politely. I remember thinking: Why would anyone say no to a promotion? At that stage of my career, moving up felt like the very definition of success. Wasn’t that what everyone wanted? Why would anyone choose to wait?
For years, I believed he had passed up an opportunity that most people would eagerly accept. It would take me more than three decades—leading teams, building businesses, mentoring leaders, and watching hundreds of careers unfold—before I truly understood what he meant.
He wasn’t delaying success. He was investing in the person he needed to become before success arrived.
I’ve come to realize that promotions rarely change who we are.
They reveal whom we’ve already become.
I’ve seen exceptionally talented people struggle because they reached the next role before developing the judgment, perspective, or emotional maturity it demanded.
I’ve also seen others quietly prepare long before anyone noticed.
When their opportunity arrived, they didn’t merely survive.
They flourished.
Years later, another senior leader shared a remarkably similar perspective. That’s when I realized this wasn’t one person’s philosophy. It was a timeless leadership principle.
Instead of asking,
“When will I get promoted?”
Perhaps the better question is,
“Who am I becoming before the promotion arrives?”
Because promotions are often decided by someone else. Who we become before they arrive is entirely up to us.
Pause & Reflect
Think about the next opportunity you’re hoping for.
If it arrived tomorrow…would you truly be ready?
If not…
What can you begin learning today that your future self will thank you for?
